Lost Lyrics is part of a movement. Created in response to unimaginative teachers, negative labels and boring classes, Lost Lyrics is the alternative…rooted in the search for self-determination.
Hip Hop culture is the inspiration and tool utilized to break down the images, pressures, and issues our young people face. Together we create our own road-map, somewhere between the streets and the classroom, pushing young minds to engage, speak and rebel…but still graduate.
What we do . . .
THE BLUEPRINT CLASSES:
Lost Lyrics Blueprint classes are where we lay the foundation for our students in grades 6-9 in the communities of Jane-Finch and Malvern. Our units include: The Roots of Hip Hop, Sexuality and Gender Politics, The Roots of Beauty Ideals, Revolutionary Activism and Hood Politics. Blueprint classes happen from January to June.
ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS:
Artistic Development sessions are where students take the knowledge from the Blueprint and lay it down in their rhymes, paint it in their graffiti, expose it through their photographic lens and explore it on a theatrical stage. These sessions happen on weekends from January to June in downtown Toronto and connect east and west together.
THE OG’S (ORIGINAL GRIOTS)
In 2010 we will be introducing to the stage the OG’s. Continuing in the legacy of the Blueprint, we will be engaging themes such as the Roots of Hip Hop Culture, Art as Disruption, the Roots of Beauty Ideals and Hood Politics. However, with the Original Griots we go deeper, ask more questions; create collective solutions. The name OG’s pays homage to the fact that these students have grown up with Lost Lyrics; it was their original stories that paved the foundation for what eventually became the Lost Lyrics curriculum: social justice through Hip Hop culture. The OG’s will run from January to June in central locations of the city and will bring together participants from all across the GTA.
